Van 11 tot 14 maart 2010 organiseren de Universiteit Antwerpen (Departement Geschiedenis & Departement Letterkunde) en Koninklijk Conservatorium van de Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen Stadsklanken18|Sounds of the city 18 , een internationaal congres over muziek en stadscultuur in de achttiende eeuw en een festival met muziek van achttiende-eeuwse componisten uit Antwerpen en de Zuidelijke Nederlanden.

Centraal in zowel het colloquium als het festival staat het achttiende-eeuwse Antwerpse stedelijk muziekleven. Verschillende facetten - de liedcultuur, de spektakelcultuur en het kerkelijk muziekleven - komen aan bod en zullen gekaderd worden in de meer internationale context van de stedelijke muziekcultuur in West-Europa. Bedoeling is te komen tot een beter inzicht van de maatschappelijke systemen die schuil gaan achter de verschillende verschijningsvormen van muziek in een stedelijke omgeving.

Wetenschappelijke presentaties worden afgewisseld en geconfronteerd met klinkende muziek, en in een panelgesprek over uitvoeringspraktijk, historiciteit en authenticiteit gaan musicologen, muzikanten, historici en concertorganisatoren de dialoog aan.

Between 11 and 14 March 2010 the   University   of   Antwerp   (Department of History & Department of Literature) and the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp (Artesis Unviersity College) organise Stadsklanken18|Sounds of the city 18 , an international conference on music and urban culture in the eighteenth century and a festival with music of eighteenth-century composers from Antwerp and the Southern Netherlands.

The main theme of the congress and the festival is the musical culture in eighteenth-century Antwerp. Diverse aspects - private music, music & spectacle culture and music & religion - will be confronted with the international context. We wish to reach a greater insight in the social systems which form the basis of the different faces of music in an urban context.

Academic lectures will alternate with music, and a panel session will stimulate the dialogue between musicologists, musicians, historians and concert organisers.

Update: The registration date for the conference and the concerts has been extended until 10 March 2010.
